Description
In an age of complex manners and rules, Victorians used symbolism to speak a secret language. They were highly influenced by Romanticism in their jewelry fabrication. The heart has long been recognized across cultures as being a symbol of love, remembrance, joy and compassion. A crown on the top of a heart symbolizes 'ruler of my heart.' Turquoise was a popular stone in sentimental jewelry beginning in the late Georgian period, and was especially popular in pavé settings starting in the 1840s and continued throughout the century, its color reminiscent of Forget-Me-Not flowers. Pearls epitomized innocence, purity, humility & harmony.
A particularly lovely Victorian crowned heart, it's made of silver-topped 15kt yellow gold (as was common of the time and indicates English origin). It is fully pavé set with vibrant turquoise and natural pearls in the crown. It dates from the late 19th Century circa 1870-1890. It's a great size, larger than usual. A lovely piece of dimensional jewelry that is becoming increasingly difficult to find. Shows moderate wear consistent with age.
