I'm SO excited to share a new project that's sure to make you smile - DIY jewelry kits designed with my friend Erica Chan Coffman of HonestlyWTF fame.  Born out of a friendship that spans almost a decade, Erica and I were looking for something fun and creative to do with our idle hands while we were sheltering in place. And since we live so close to one another in the East Bay, a fun collab seemed like a no brainer. We met (masked) in our backyards and played around with different materials and concepts—and something pretty great was born. We both share a 'more is more' attitude and an appreciation of bright color, playful elements, and the ability to not take things too seriously—a serious gift in times like these. So, we sat down with Erica to talk inspo, friendship, and partnerships in times like these...

How long have you and Ariel known each other?
We first met back in 2011 just a year after I first started my blog HonestlyWTF . . . almost a decade ago! Wow.

What was the genesis of the partnership?
Ariel and I have always toyed around with the idea of collaborating on a project. One night last year, in the midst of the pandemic lockdown, we were texting and threw around the possibility of creating a DIY kit together as so many of us were desperate to find things to do to help pass the time. I'll never forget it - we were exchanging texts and she just called me and said: So, when are we going to do this??

What was the inspiration behind going down a route like this vs. exploring a partnership in fine jewelry?
It's the perfect amalgamation of Ariel Gordon and HonestlyWTF: fine jewelry and DIY. Both can certainly co-exist and I can't wait for people to try their hand at it!

What was the design and partnership process like? Describe the collaborative process?
Collaborating with Ariel is a dream. We think very similarly and I love how we each like to push the envelope a bit. I mean, we both share the same mantra: "More is more is more is better!" I really got to experience her can-do attitude first hand and I found it to be so inspirational. When we discovered the colorful paracord, the ideas just started flowing from that point on. Ariel and I would hang out on each other's porches, always masked of course, to experiment and play with materials. We started out thinking we'd create one kit but ended up having to narrow down our ideas to 3. It was just too much fun!

What has drawn you to AGJ in the past? What pieces or elements of the brand resonate with you?
Ariel's pieces are evergreen. Here jewelry is just a part of me, quite literally. I actually never take my fine jewelry off - I sleep, workout and shower in it all!

What are you most drawn to in these new designs?
I love how playful they are but also how we have incorporated fine elements like 14k gold charms and freshwater pearls into the bracelet and necklace kits. And the flexibility to customize it however you wish is totally intentional - I'm just so excited for people to have fun with it!

How do you intend to wear these new pieces with your #agjeveryday?
I'll definitely be layering the pearl necklace with my everyday gold chain stack. And of course, the bracelets will be worn all at once and/or with all kinds of AGJ gold chains and cuffs.

Both you and Ariel are based in Northern California. Are there any inherently Californian vibes to the color or charm of the new collection?
Ariel and I, perhaps in a very Californian way, don't take ourselves too seriously. I think our relaxed yet bold and color vibes resonate in our DIY collection!
